Pair of Georgian Plate Buckets - Plain
Product Description
Plate Buckets were used in the 18th Century in stately homes in Ireland and England for taking dinner plates from the downstairs Kitchen up to the Dining Room. A pair of buckets consists of one with a slot and one without a slot. The bucket with the slot is for taking the clean plates upstairs and the bucket without the slot is for taking the dirty plates back downstairs.
The buckets are made from period mahogany, with coopered construction (as a barrel is made) and brass band bound and brass handles. There are three styles Plain, Ribbed and Spiral Twist carving.
Nowadays you will find them as decorative items adorning a fireplace filled with logs or peat. They are highly sought after and command high prices, with the Spiral Twist carved being the most sought after
Made from period mahogany and french polished with shellac and finally waxed.
This is a Dollhouse collectible miniature in 1" scale.
